The Exeter Incident
The Exeter UFO Incident, also known as the Incident at Exeter, refers to a series of unidentified flying object sightings that took place in and around Exeter, New Hampshire, in the United States during the summer of 1965. This event gained significant attention due to the number of witnesses and the credibility of those reporting the sightings.
The incident began on September 3, 1965, when Norman Muscarello, an 18-year-old, reported seeing a red orb-like object hovering above the trees near Route 150 in Kensington, a town neighboring Exeter. Terrified by the encounter, Muscarello rushed to a nearby house, where he explained the incident to the occupants. They were skeptical at first, but when they went outside, they also witnessed the red orb in the sky.
Following this initial sighting, the case attracted the attention of local police officer Eugene Bertrand, who was dispatched to the area to investigate. Upon arrival, Bertrand witnessed the object himself and described it as a pulsating red light, shaped like a football or an egg, hovering silently in the sky. Bertrand radioed for backup, and another officer, David Hunt, joined him at the scene. The two officers observed the object for several minutes before it disappeared into the distance.
The following evening, on September 4, 1965, the incident escalated when a married couple, Barney and Betty Hill, experienced a strange encounter while driving near Exeter. They reported seeing a bright light in the sky that seemed to be following their car. Terrified, they stopped the vehicle and witnessed a large, silent craft with flashing lights hovering above them. Barney described the craft as flat and pancake-shaped, with a row of windows and a red light on one end.
Overwhelmed by fear, the Hills quickly drove away from the area and eventually arrived home, not realizing that they had lost approximately two hours of time. They began experiencing strange dreams and inexplicable memories, prompting them to seek the help of a psychiatrist, Dr. Benjamin Simon, to undergo hypnosis regression sessions. Through these sessions, the Hills described being taken aboard the craft and subjected to medical examinations by small, non-human entities.
The Exeter UFO Incident gained widespread media attention, and as a result, numerous other witnesses came forward with their own accounts of sightings in the area during the same time frame. Many of the descriptions matched the Hills’ and the police officers’ observations, corroborating their claims.
The incident also attracted the interest of renowned UFO investigator, J. Allen Hynek, who visited Exeter to conduct his own investigation. After interviewing witnesses and examining the evidence, Hynek concluded that the sightings were genuine and could not be easily dismissed as hoaxes or misidentifications.
The Exeter UFO Incident remains one of the most well-documented and credible cases in UFO history. It contributed to the overall body of evidence supporting the existence of unidentified flying objects and sparked further interest in the field of ufology. While skeptics have offered alternative explanations, the witnesses involved in the incident maintained the validity of their experiences throughout their lives, leaving the Exeter UFO Incident an intriguing and unexplained phenomenon
