Unidentified Aerial Phenomena and the US Coast Guard

Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP), commonly known as UFOs, have been a topic of fascination and speculation for decades. While sightings have been reported by various individuals and organizations, one sector that has unexpectedly found itself at the center of numerous encounters is the United States Coast Guard. In this blog post, we will delve into the intriguing reports involving the US Coast Guard and their encounters with unidentified aerial phenomena.

  1. The 1952 Washington, D.C. UFO Incident:

One of the earliest and most significant UFO sightings involving the US Coast Guard occurred during the summer of 1952 in Washington, D.C. While the primary focus was on sightings by civilian and military personnel, the Coast Guard also reported unusual radar returns and visual observations of fast-moving, unexplained objects in the sky. The incident prompted an official investigation known as Project Blue Book, but the source of the mysterious sightings remained unresolved.

During the same time period a United States Coast Guard photographer, Shell R. Alpert, took a photograph that allegedly shows unidentified flying objects flying in a “V” formation at the Salem, Massachusetts, air station at 9:35 a.m. on 16 July 1952, through a window screen. 1. The Chincoteague Incident (1972):

In 1972, near Chincoteague, Virginia, a US Coast Guard crew encountered a bright, hovering object with no discernible features. The crew reported the incident, and despite an official investigation, the origins and nature of the object remained unexplained. The Chincoteague Incident is often cited as an example of a UFO encounter involving multiple witnesses and credible military personnel.

  1. The Aguadilla Airport Incident (2013):

One of the more recent and well-documented cases involving the US Coast Guard took place near the Rafael Hernandez Airport in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, in 2013. A Homeland Security surveillance aircraft, operated by the US Coast Guard, captured infrared footage of a UAP flying low over the water. The object demonstrated unusual flight patterns and even appeared to submerge itself in the ocean. The incident raised questions about the capabilities of the observed object and drew attention to the potential existence of underwater UAPs.

      4.  FOIA release of Coast Guard Encounters

Between 1978 and 1990, U.S. UFO researcher Barry Greenwood compiled, under FOIA, 160 pages of American Coast Guard UFO records reported from 1952 to 1989. Between 1975 and 1978, ufologist Robert Todd had also used the Freedom of Information Act to collect UFO reports related to US Coast Guard personnel.
