UFO Police Chase, Portage County Ohio

UFO Police Chase, Portage County Ohio

On the night of April 17, 1966, in Portage County, Ohio, Deputy Sheriff Dale Spaur and his partner, Deputy Wilbur “Barney” Neff, reported a remarkable UFO encounter and pursuit that would become a well-known case in the annals of UFO sightings.

The incident began when the two deputies were patrolling near Ravenna, Ohio, around 5:00 a.m. They received a call about an abandoned vehicle on Route 224. When they arrived at the scene, they noticed a peculiar, low-flying, metallic object in the sky. The object was described as disc-shaped with a series of flashing lights.

Spaur and Neff initially thought it might be a small plane in distress, so they decided to follow it while keeping it in sight. The UFO, however, did not behave like any conventional aircraft. It made sudden and erratic maneuvers, moving both silently and at incredible speeds.

Over the course of their pursuit, the officers chased the UFO for approximately 86 miles through several counties in Ohio and into Pennsylvania. They maintained radio contact with their police station and reported their observations throughout the chase.

During the chase, multiple police officers and civilians also reported seeing the UFO. The witnesses described similar characteristics, such as the object’s disc-like shape, bright lights, and unusual flight patterns.

The pursuit came to an end when the officers reached Conway, Pennsylvania. At that point, the UFO abruptly disappeared, leaving the officers and other witnesses baffled.

The Portage County UFO Chase gained widespread attention and remains a prominent case in UFO folklore. Investigators from various organizations examined the incident, but despite extensive inquiries, no definitive explanation or conclusive evidence was ever provided to explain the UFO sighting.

The case has been cited in discussions of UFO encounters due to the involvement of trained law enforcement officers, the extended duration of the sighting, and the numerous corroborating witness reports. However, like many UFO cases, it remains an unsolved mystery, leaving room for various interpretations and theories about what Deputy Spaur, Deputy Neff, and others may have encountered that early morning in 1966.
