Humanity could be clutching the frail barque of an outmoded world view while the wind of the mind is swaying the stars into very real craft, and out of them is coming… a faint call for help from a lady in a flowered dress. ~ Whitley Strieber
Communion: The Abduction of Whitley Strieber
Whitley Strieber’s book Communion is a first-hand account of his alleged abduction by extraterrestrial beings. The events described in the book took place over several years, from 1985 to 1987, and are based on Strieber’s personal recollections and experiences.
In the early hours of December 26th, 1985, Strieber was staying at his cabin in upstate New York with his wife and son when he woke up in the middle of the night and felt a strange presence in the room. He describes seeing a figure standing by his bed, which he initially thought was a burglar. However, as he became more alert, he realized that the figure was not human.
Strieber describes the entity as being approximately four feet tall, with large, black, almond-shaped eyes, and a small, slit-like mouth. It had a thin, hairless body, and delicate, bird-like hands with long, thin fingers. The entity appeared to be wearing a skin-tight suit, which Strieber described as being made of a material that felt like “soft leather.”
As Strieber watched, the entity beckoned to him and he felt a strong compulsion to follow it. He got out of bed and followed the entity to the living room, where he was joined by another entity, which looked similar to the first. The two entities then proceeded to carry out a series of medical procedures on Strieber, including taking samples of his blood and other bodily fluids, and inserting a long needle into his brain.
Strieber describes feeling a sense of intense fear and disorientation throughout the experience, and he initially believed that he was being kidnapped by some sort of malevolent force. However, as the encounter continued, he began to sense a strange telepathic connection with the entities, which he describes as being “alien yet familiar.”
Over the following years, Strieber had a number of similar encounters with the entities, which he came to refer to as “the visitors.” He describes being taken aboard a spacecraft and being shown a series of vivid, often terrifying visions, which he believes were intended to convey a message of some sort.
Throughout the book, Strieber grapples with the implications of his experiences and tries to make sense of what he has been through. He describes feeling both a deep sense of awe and wonder at the apparent existence of extraterrestrial life, as well as a profound sense of isolation and alienation from the rest of humanity.
Despite the intense skepticism that greeted his account of the events, Strieber has maintained that his experiences were genuine, and has continued to write about his encounters with the visitors in subsequent books and interviews. While his claims remain controversial, they have had a significant impact on popular culture and have helped to shape the modern image of alien abduction phenomena.
